Imperialism and Jennifer Laude

Co-sponsored and with generous support from the Harvard Asia Center.

On October 11, 2014, Filipina woman Jennifer Laude was drowned by U.S. Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton, who argued that Laude had deceived and “raped” him by failing to disclose she was transgender. Two weeks ago, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte granted a controversial “absolute pardon” to Pemberton, releasing him four years early from his 10-year prison sentence.

Join TAPAS and the Harvard Philippines Forum (HPF) for an open-forum panel discussion on OCTOBER 1 FROM 8 - 9:30 EST featuring Queer theorist and Fulbright scholar Zachary Frial, UC Riverside Sociology Professor Victoria Reyes, and PJ Raval, the director of Call Her Ganda for a discussion of both the Laude case itself and its historical, cultural, and political resonances.
